Visit from Bay State Textile
This week KCC welcomed Ms. Samantha Marino from Bay State Textiles to shared the benefits of textile recycling in an age appropriate manner to Mrs. Vincent’s STEM First and Second Grade STEM classes. Did you know "fast fashion" is the second biggest consumer of water, accounts for 10% of total global carbon emissions, and over 85% of all textiles go to landfills each year? These pictures are of Mrs. Carbone's class in front of the Bay State Textiles bin that the students call Carl the Container! This is where clothing and textiles including shoes, sheets and blankets, towels, curtains, tablecloths, mismatched socks, even items with holes and stains can go! They accept any condition of textile, so there's no need to throw anything in the trash! The textiles are then sent off to a grading facility where it is sorted according to items that can be used again as it is, changed to something new (such as wiping rags), or completely repurposed into something different, such as insulation for a home! They also send some items to their affiliate in South America, providing jobs for people who can sell and/or remake the textiles into something new. Pretty cool! We are thankful to have Ms. Marion as a part of Mashpee's Connected Community.
The Key Club is sponsoring this walk in collaboration with HOSA, the Human Rights Clubs and the K Kids. This walk consists of walking 1-2 miles around the Commons prior to the store's opening. You may start your walk anytime between 9-11 AM. (Registration takes place at the bandshell). The walk begins at the Bandshell on Steeple Street and will end in front of Siena Restaurant. At 11:00 AM we will have a raffle for all registered walkers. You can win a Mashpee Commons gift card or a gift card from area restaurants.
All proceeds will benefit the Thirst Project, an organization that raises money to build wells in villages that do not have access to clean water. The Thirst Project was started in Southern California by seven college students and has since grown into a massive student lead project across the United States that has provided clean drinking water to over 500,000 people. Our goal is to raise $12,500 which will fund one well for 450 people for 30+ years.
The recommended donation amount for students is $10, and for adults it is $20. Participants can either walk a one-mile loop or a two-mile loop. If you cannot walk but would like to donate checks can be mailed to:
