 "Every Child Matters"

The Falcon Nest!

Students earn falcon eggs for showing prosocial behaviors that are aligned to the Falcon Five. Every classroom has a falcon nest where students collect their eggs representing kind acts and when they are caught randomly showing Falcon 5 behaviors.

Classroom nests are then emptied into the school's nest. When the school's nest is full, KCCS celebrates! This week, we showed our school spirit by wearing blue and white! Also, Thunder swooped down from his nest to meet students because Thunder was so impressed! He will be sure to visit second graders next!

ALICE Drill

On Thursday, KCCS held their first ALICE Drill. Prior to the drill, on Wednesday Office Hennessey spoke to every class about ALICE in a developmentally appropriate way. Thank  you to the Mashpee Police Department for taking care of our youngest Falcons as well as our dedicated staff by facilitating the drill. These drills are important and we take the safety of the building very seriously. Students followed all staff directions and we are very proud of them. Click here to learn more about ALICE.

STEM NEWS!
Yesterday, while Mrs. McMorrow‘s first grade class was in STEM, they had the pleasure of watching a fairly rare phenomenon as one of our Madagascar hissing cockroach females had babies! What’s really unique about Madagascar hissing cockroaches is it appears they are giving birth to live young, however that’s not how it happens. A female will drop an unfertilized ootheca out of her abdomen and wait for a male to fertilize it. If it becomes fertilized, she then brings the ootheca back inside her abdomen (think of it like a kangaroo pouch) where she will hold it until her babies hatch. The reason they are bright white when they come out is because their exoskeletons are super soft and have not hardened to the dark color that we are used to seeing. In fact, when Madagascar hissing cockroaches molt, they are bright white, even as adults! Very cool! - Ms. Vincent

Lunch Cards
In the cafeteria, students are given their own lunch card each day. If your child doesn't have a lunch card yet, that is okay. All students are eligible for lunch and will receive one. Lunch cards are currently being made as well as updated since we just had picture day.

***Half Day Dismissal***
When KCCS has a half day,
PreK dismissal: 11:45 AM
K, 1 and 2 dismissal: 12:30 PM.
Our first half day is Monday, September 30th.

Attendance and Academics
All grade levels are being taught crucial skills that will last a life time and daily attendance is vital to your child's success. Classes have started our math curriculum, Reveal as well as our literacy curriculum, Wonders. Reveal is designed to build mathematic skills while also building the verbal capacities of children to think deeply about solving problems. Wonders teaches the components of literacy to build fluent readers with deep comprehension skills. The two curriculums work hand in hand because students talk out problems and use mathematical language that assists with reading comprehension and fluency. Thank you for partnering with us to make sure your children are here daily. If you have questions about your child's curriculum, please reach out to your child's teacher. In addition, the DPW is taking extra sanitizing and disinfecting the building.

PBIS at KCCS!
The Kenneth C. Coombs School is a PBIS school. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This year at KCC we will be continuing to teach our youngest Mashpee Falcons that they can contribute to the strength and success of our school community by following our Falcon Five, a set of positive behavior expectations that we have for all of our students across the school day.

The Falcon Five are: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Caring and Be Ready.

Throughout the year, staff members will be acknowledging and connecting with students as they follow these expectations and core values of our school. As a way to mark these successful moments for students, staff members may give students “Falcon Eggs”  (shiny metallic coins) for them to contribute to a Falcon nest jar within their own classroom. Each week, classrooms will empty their nests into a school wide nest. As a school community, we will celebrate the success of our students once the school wide nest has been filled.

Occasionally, students may come home with Falcon Eggs in their pockets and backpacks. While we want to encourage students to contribute eggs to the nests at school, we understand and value that some of our KCC students may bring Falcon Eggs home because they want to share their school successes with families and caregivers. However, if you find that one too many Falcon Eggs have made their way into your home through this means, please know you are welcome to send them back into school where we will reuse them to continue to acknowledge our student’s success.

We look forward to working with families and caregivers this school year to help promote student success with following the Falcon Five!

Falcon Marathon Fridays!
Our Falcon Marathon Fridays will begin the week of September 22nd for all second graders. We will meet every Friday during Integrated Arts to walk, jog, or run one mile on school grounds or in the gym. Our goal is to have the students complete an entire Marathon (26.2 miles) by the end of May! Students will also be participating in mindfulness and gentle movement activities during this time. Please have your child bring a labeled water bottle, wear sneakers and weather appropriate clothing for outdoor activity. Thank you in advance for your support!
The Specialist Team: Liesl Crehan, Betsey Caldwell Jackie Friel, Megan Smith, Jaime Vincent

AC Update!
We are almost at 100% capacity with our AC project. Only two classrooms need to come online. Classes are nice and cool throughout the day!

Art Class News!
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
– Pablo Picasso
We are off to a great start this year in art class! I have many new and exciting projects for this year. We will be working in different mediums including sculpture, painting, printmaking, paper art, drawing, and much more! We will be posting our art projects on Artsonia, which not only lets us share the Artwork with friends and relatives far away, but also offers us a wonderful way to earn funds for the art program through customized keepsakes. I look forward to working with your children and am always impressed and amazed to see how they grow, change, and create over the course of the school year. I hope you will always feel welcome in the art room and that you enjoy all the masterpieces that the 2024-2025 school year will bring!

PTO News and BBQ
It was so lovely seeing all of our amazing families at the Open House last night! Thank you to everyone who donated to our Bake Sale, purchased treats and Spirit Wear, and to those who just wanted to give support to our organization. Another thank you to the many parents who signed up to be on our volunteer list!
A kind reminder to who we are and what we stand for as we move forward: Whether you are only able to attend events or meetings, only able to donate financially, want to do all of the things, or can only do the bare minimum- any bit of support you can offer is the perfect amount. We are all in this together. And, even if this is not the season for you to be present in anything outside of the grind of life, that is OKAY! We are here for every single family, student, and staff member NO MATTER WHAT.

In addition to a successful night of Bake Sale and Spirit Wear sales, we do want to celebrate an incredible donation made by the Pires Family. For the second year in a row, they have generously gifted our Physical Education staff with EZ Scan lanyards for the entire 2nd Grade. These lanyards allow students to keep track of how many miles they are completing throughout the year as they work towards completing a full marathon! So amazing.
Our Welcome Back BBQ is taking place on Friday September 20th from 5pm-7pm. One week away! There is a chance of rain as of right now, but we will keep our fingers crossed for a change in the forecast. A quick update on the  increased risk of West Nile and EEE that has been issued: We will be supplying bug spray for everyone to use throughout the event, and we are looking into making sure the field has been or can be sprayed for extra protection. We want to ensure the health and safety of everyone, while still being able to come together as a community for some fun!
Upcoming:
** PTO Meeting Monday October 7th, 6:00pm via Zoom
** Welcome Back BBQ will be held on Friday September 20th (Rain Date Friday September 27th) from 5:00pm-7:00pm. We are looking for a few parent volunteers to be on our planning committee and as part of our set-up and break-down crew, as well as manning activity stations. Please email the PTO President, Ashley Spears, at kccptopresident@gmail.com if you are interested.

The Falcon Eye! 9/6/24

KCCS Open House
We are thrilled to invite parents and guardians to our upcoming Open House on Thursday, 9/12 from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM! This is a fantastic opportunity for you to get a glimpse into your child's academic world and meet the wonderful teachers who will be guiding them this year. This event is designed specifically for parents and guardians to learn about the school's academic curriculum, grade-level expectations, daily schedules and important learning goals for this academic year. Teacher presentations will be at 6:15 and 7:00 to accommodate parents and guardians with more than one child. This is a valuable opportunity to understand how we can work together to support your child's education and connect with other parents/guardians. We appreciate your cooperation and support and look forward to seeing you Thursday night.

KCCS/QS PTO Welcome Back BBQ!
We are excited to welcome families back to school! On Friday, 9/20 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM the PTOs from KCCS and QS will be hosting the annual Welcome Back BBQ on the field between the school.  We are THRILLED with all of the fun things we are incorporating this year! Both PTOs have been working so hard behind the scenes, and it feels incredible to collaborate together on this event. Local businesses- Coca Cola, Dino’s Pizza and Sports Bar, and Andy’s Market- have graciously donated some of our BBQ staples, including cases of water, hot dogs, and ice. Stefanie Viva will be providing DJ and MC entertainment. Nadja Carbone with the Mashpee Youth Soccer will be hosting youth soccer games against the high schoolers. Many more fun activities are on the docket, but we want to keep some things a surprise! We can’t wait to see you all there!

The Importance of Daily School Attendance

Pick Up Patrol
Pick Up Patrol has drastically improved our dismissal procedure. This year 89% of families at KCCS have signed up and are utilizing Pick Up Patrol. The goal is 100% because of how important the end of the day is for families. Last years data shows an average of just over 1,000 plan changes a month! Since the start of the school year, there have been 559 after school plan changes for children at KCCS. Using this application has cut down on hundreds of hand written notes plus phone calls to the office. It keeps the communication between parents, teachers and the front office clear and in real time. Thank you for partnering with us to strengthen communication.

Morning Drop Off
Thank you for keeping student drop off smooth and following directions from staff. Mr. Prehna (any staff at the Y) may direct you to the front bus loop prior to the arrival of school buses. Please head to the loop and drop students off there. Staff members will be ready to receive them. As a friendly reminder, please stay off your cell phones and be 100 percent attentive to the road while arriving and leaving KCCS.
*** Starting Monday 9/9, parents/guardians that arrive to school at 9:05 will be directed to the front of the building to park. Do not park in the bus loop. Please find a parking spot. Parents/guardians are required to walk children to the front door. ***

PTO News and Updates!
Things are in FULL SWING with the PTO! We had our first meeting of the year this week, and what a productive and collaborative meeting it was! We are touched by the turnout of parents and teachers; thank you for starting our year off with so much support. Also in attendance was our Interim Superintendent, David Thomson! Such a pleasure to have him with us and get to know him.

We are still in need of a few volunteers for the BBQ and Open House. We are also requesting donations of baked goods for our Bake Sale. Donations can be brought to the office on the day of, Thursday September 12th, or brought at the start of Open House (the PTO will begin setting up at 5:30pm).

Virtual PTO meetings are officially confirmed! Every other month, beginning October 7th, PTO meetings will be held via Zoom on Monday evenings at 6:00pm. Our amazing and supportive administrators are going to provide Zoom access so that our meetings can be more accessible to our families.
Upcoming:
*** PTO Meeting Monday October 7th, 6:00pm via Zoom
***The PTO will be hosting a Bake Sale during the Open House on Thursday, September 12th from 6:00-7:30 pm. We will be looking for donations of baked goods.
*** Welcome Back BBQ will be held on Friday September 20th (Rain Date Friday September 27th) from 5:00pm-7:00pm . We are looking for a few parent volunteers to be on our planning committee and as part of our set-up and break-down crew, as well as manning activity stations. Please email the PTO President, Ashley Spears, at kccptopresident@gmail.com if you are interested.

A kind reminder for families as we get ready for the Open House: This is a chance for parents and caregivers to learn about their child(ren)’s classroom, such as rules and expectations/environment and structure, as well as get to know the teachers. Our teachers work very hard to put together informative presentations to ensure we all walk away with a thorough understanding of our students’ experience while at school and the education they will be gaining. If possible, please consider finding childcare for your kiddos so you can give your full attention to the presentations and even make connections with other parents. - KCCS PTO
