Please join us Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria for our next PTO meeting.  Voting for next year's PTO Board will be taking place at this meeting. There is still time to get your nominations in for next year's board.

Story Walk at KCC
Rosemary Modic from the Coalition for Children has generously loaned us the story walk, "We are in a Book!" from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willem. The coalition purchased sets of the Elephant and Piggie series from Market Street Bookshop. Students in Ms. Blackburn’s, Ms. McDonough’s, Ms. Fulone’s and Ms. William’s classes received a copy of the book! Members of the Coalition of Children walked students through the story bringing it alive! Thank you for coming to KCC!

Mashpee's Daisy Troop Clean Up!
KCC students who are members of the Mashpee Daisy Troop picked up trash from the left of the car pick up line to about right before the access road. They had so much fun and were proud of their hard work. The girls that attend KCC are Isabella, Lizzie, and Luna! Two Daisies who are from Barnstable helped out too, Rylee and Rosie. Thank you Jackie Feregrino-Rodrigues for keeping children involved in their connected community! KCC appreciates your hard work!

Ms. McDonough's Class
Students met and learned about baby quails!

KCC Nurse Update: Flu Information

Flu typically affects 20 to 50 percent of the U.S. population each winter and continues through at least May. It's a highly contagious disease, spreading mostly by direct person-to-person contact. Coughing is the most common way of spread. The flu virus can linger in the air for as long as three hours. In close quarters, conditions are ripe for the spread of the virus. That explains why the highest incidence of the flu is in 5 to 14-year-olds, who spend much of their time in school, in close contact with their classmates. The most serious complications occur in older adults, however. Flu is like the cold in many ways--most basically, they're both respiratory infections caused by viruses. If a cold is misdiagnosed as flu, there's no problem. At worst, a cold can occasionally lead to secondary bacterial infections of the middle ear or sinuses, which can be treated with antibiotics. But if the flu is misdiagnosed as a bad cold, potentially life-threatening flu complications like pneumonia may be overlooked.

Flu Prevention Strategies:  Here are several tips to prevent the flu from occurring:

    • Avoid contact with people who are ill. If you are ill, stay home. Confine yourself to your bedroom to protect your loved ones. If your loved ones are ill, do your best to avoid contact.

 • Cover your mouth and nose. The flu is spread by coughing, sneezing, and unclean hands. Masking when symptomatic also helps slow spread.

• Wash your hands. Use soap and water to keep hands clean, especially after coughing and sneezing. When soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.

• Abstain from touching your nose and eyes. Germs can be spread from these orifices.

• Keep your home and work areas clean. Disinfect surfaces often.

• Prevent illness by getting rest, staying active, eating well, and staying hydrated.

• Talk to your health care provider about getting a flu shot. It is not too late.
